Visual editing explanation

One technique that was used in terms of editing the short film was the use of texts and graphics. For this form of editing, we added the name of the film at the beginning of the film, so that the audience would know what the film was called. We added the text, overlaying the montage at the beginning, to signify that the film has begun. We also added some other graphics at parts around the film, such as having a text which says what week and day it was. The idea of having this would let the audience know how far into the film we have gotten to. Also, this would give the idea that the character’s mindset has changed, considering that there haven’t been many changes to his life.

Static fade is another technique that was used. With this transition, it was used mainly when the scene ended or when it was going to begin. We placed the transition on the timeline between the shot of the montage and the graphic as that would have been a place where a transition would take place. We used this transition to convey that it is going to a new scene. This would make the audience have some form of empathy as they may have felt that they were in a position of being watched or controlled as they go through the process of having their minds being lost.

The filter is another visual editing technique that was used for our editing. With this one, we decided to use a different filter for each scene. For example, in the first scene, we left it natural to convey that it is the first day when the character realizes the state of his isolation. Then in the park scene, we added a yellow/orange filter, which conveyed that the character’s mind of the state is beginning to slow down. Then, in the final scene, we then added two different filters, with one being a bright orange filter to convey what the character thinks he sees and a camera filter, which conveys who is actually in the room. This would convey that the character, unable to speak to anyone in real life, is starting to hallucinate.

Another technique included is a montage. At the very beginning of our film, we have a montage, where it shows various empty locations, such as different parks and a school. The use of this montage would display one of the themes in the film, which is emptiness. As the film relates to lockdown, we wanted to display how different it is with no one at places where it is normally packed.

We Also changed a visual in the last scene. We added a security visual effect for the last scene. To achieve this, we placed this effect over the clips and this changed how it appeared. The choice of this would have conveyed how the character actually appears as he is talking to his imaginary friends. Also, this would connote how people an be viewed differently, especially being alone for a long time. This visual would let the viewers know the difference between what the character sees and what it really happening.

We also had a normal fade. We had this transition in two instances, with one being the montage where it displayed two sides of a corridor and another one leading up to the main dialogue in the last scene. This would present the passage of time and how time is passing by as the friends are having a conversation.

Evaluating feedback

When we finished editing our short film, we did a focus group, in which we had some people come and watch our film and asked them to give so...
