Short film analysis 2

Title

What works well

(think conventions)

Could be better if

A mind of its own

Storyline  It’s clearly shown wheresomething depraved will occur, therefore engaging the audience as they would wonder what will happen next

Sound- good use of non diegetic music to connote that something sinister is about to occur

Shows some clear conventions of the horror genre, such as an antagonist trying to take everyone out.

Clear presentation on the type of characters, such as the psychopath, which would make the audience fear for the other characters as they could potentially be killed off without reason

More of a darker setting to convey more of the horror atmosphere.

The part when the guy is listening to his phone could be quieter as a way to present that only he can hear his music

Blurred

Duration of the film was appropriate as it gives audience insight of someone who has dyslexia.

Character - main character’s action gives audience insight on the type of person he is, allowing the audience to emphasize with him as they may be in a similar situation as him.

Storyline is somewhat clear as it follows the perspective of one character

Suitable use of the voiceover to depict what is going on in his mind

There could be more insight of what thefilm is based on around the beginning to help the audience understand more

Life of Kurt

The main character is presented as someone who is in trouble.

Although it is a low budget film, there is good use of the location and suited well within each part of the film, such as the last scene where the main character is tied up in a dark room, depicting that he is in danger

Duration of the film clearly implies that conflict will happen straight away, which was suitable in engaging the audience.

Better angle on the representative standing as the audience are unable to identify him

Hallucinations (Dilly edit)

Good choice of music. The use of uprising music connotes an act of something sinister about to occur.

In terms of budget, the mise en scene was well suited in presenting the mind of the main character after taking the drug

Storyline is relatable to the audience as they may have been in a situation where they have been drugged against their will

There could have been a clear shot on when the person is attacked to present. There could have been a shot from the perspective of the protagonist to present to the audience what she sees when someone attacks her.

What can you emulate from these in your work?

From these works, I could ensure that the characters have a suitable representation so that the audience are able to acknowledge the type of person that they are. Also, I could ensure that there are some clear conventions of a short film, such as a clear storyline which the audience could relate to.

Evaluating feedback

When we finished editing our short film, we did a focus group, in which we had some people come and watch our film and asked them to give so...
